We created a new food growing space on the site of a disused bowling green in Wythenshawe.
Working with local residents, we transformed a piece of derelict land into a community food growing resource.
The McDonald’s fast food restaurant in Wythenshawe was built on the site of the former Royal Oak pub and part of the lease included the pub’s former bowling green which had lain derelict for a number of years.
We cleared the land, secured it with new fencing, installed vegetable planters, water butts and a tool shed. We also taught local residents how to grow their own food.
Tex A Barlow, a member of the local community commented; “This piece of land had been seen as a problem for the local community for many years so it’s wonderful to see it now being valued. It’s gone from local eyesore to local treasure, it’s a place that we’re now really proud of”.
