We transformed a piece of derelict land in Gorton into a food growing site for the whole community.
Gorton Community Centre in Manchester acts as a vital hub for residents living nearby – providing opportunities for people of all ages to come together to enjoy social and learning activities.
Whilst the building itself is a valued local asset; the adjacent piece of land was unused and unloved. We worked to clear the land into a community food growing area; adding 60 bulk containers for planting fruit and vegetables, a new path network, communal shelter and a polytunnel.
Local resident, Joe Larrigan said: “Green spaces provide a place for people to come together, meet their neighbours, enjoy some fresh air and get in touch with nature – offering a bit of an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
"Older Gorton residents in particular have taken the project to their heart. They have shown huge commitment and enthusiasm and are sharing their skills and knowledge with younger generations.”
