Salford orchard set to receive ‘Bags of Help’ boost

7 March 2017

Tesco Bags of Help has announced the shortlisted projects to go to a public vote with an orchard in Salford set to benefit from £1,000, £2,000 or £5,000.

Monmouth Park in Ordsall is set to be the home of a new fruitful forest for the future, with City of Trees working closely with the Friends of Ordsall Parks to give the site a new lease of life.

Plans are in place for the creation of a community orchard, consisting of nine fruit trees, a mixture of apple, plum, cherry and pear, as well as new benches and community seating to encourage visitors to stay and enjoy the park.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Kevin Wigley comments “This orchard will create a focal point for visitors with new seating allowing people to stop and enjoy this important green space.”

Julie Barbour, a representative from Friends of Ordsall Parks comments “The orchard would bring some colour and interest into the park and the benches will be great for picnics in the summer.”

City of Trees plans to work with the local community to teach them how to look after the trees, including pruning and foraging for fruit, ensuring there will be harvests for generations to come.

Monmouth Park in Ordsall, Salford is a small but well-used park at the heart of a residential area, near to the historic Ordsall Hall. Close to the Exchange Quay tram stop it is used as a cut-through with open grassed areas and tree-lined paths.

Voting is open in stores throughout March and April. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £27 million to more than 3,500 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

In order to vote, customers must make a purchase within store of any value. They will then receive one token per transaction and it's not necessary to purchase a carrier bag in order to receive a token.

Voting for this project will be in the following stores: Eccles Liverpool Road; Firswood Manchester Express, Oxford Road Express, Stretford Metro, Salford Quays Express, Pendlebury Express, Fallowfield Manchester Express, Stretford Extra, Chorlton Express, Whalley Range Express, Eccles Monton Road Express, Manchester Swinton Express, and Salford Extra.
