Two people at community garden developing as part of green spaces fund

Green Spaces Fund

Supporting the Green Spaces Fund

The £2.6m Greater Manchester Green Spaces Fund supports community-led projects that increase the amount and quality of accessible, nature-rich green space in the city region, particularly in the areas where people need it most. This fund has been a successful outcome of Andy Burnham’s Manifesto to create a greener Greater Manchester. Since its launch in 2022, the fund has invested over £3 million and enabled more than 100 community groups to develop projects across the city region, including orchards, green alleyways, allotments and community gardens.

So far, over 28,000 m2 of new green space has been created, and nearly 400,000 m2 of existing green space has been improved.

City of Trees is a proud delivery partner of the GM Green Spaces Fund. We provide funding advisor support for groups in Stockport and Tameside looking to apply for the fund.

Case Study: Woodland Management in Nansen Park

The Friends of Marje Kelly Park applied for the Green Spaces Fund to improve three sites across Trafford: Marje Kelly Park, Gorse Hill Park, and Nansen Park.

City of Trees delivered woodland management work at Nansen Park, including selective thinning, invasive species removal, habitat creation, understorey planting, wildflower planting, and path improvements.

The project will be completed in the winter and will involve other project partners, including Trafford Council, The Conservation Volunteers, and Gorse Hill Studios, as well as several groups of volunteers.
